DISCUSSION

.A strong Arctic cold front is moving through the Mid-South and
bringing rain that will change over to a mixture of sleet and
snow. Minor accumulations are expected. In addition, rain from
earlier this afternoon may freeze and cause black ice in some
spots.

* COUNTIES...Lake-Obion-Weakley-Henry-Dyer-Gibson-Carroll-Benton-

* TIMING... Through Midnight CST.

* MAIN IMPACT...Total sleet and snow accumulation of 1 inch is
  expected in most locations, however isolated spots in excess of
  1 inch are possible.

* OTHER IMPACTS...Moisture from earlier rains may freeze on
  bridges and other elevated surfaces.

The Situation

A strong cold front will move across the Mid-South this

afternoon and evening, bringing much colder air to the region.

Widespread rain is expected to change over to a mixture of light snow and
sleet late this afternoon in northeast Arkansas, far northwest
Tennessee, and the Missouri Bootheel, with the rain-snow line
moving south during the evening and early morning hours. A period
of freezing drizzle is also possible as the precipitation tapers
off tonight.

Cold Air Arrives and Moisture Pulls Out

While we do anticipate the changeover to light wintry

precipitation, the cold air will be arriving as the moisture is

pulling out of the area. This will limit accumulations across the

Mid-South. At this time, there is a potential for a light dusting up to perhaps
a half inch of snow, mainly north of a line from
Bolivar, to Decaturville. This may result in some slick spots on
bridges and overpasses as temperatures fall below freezing
tonight. That said, many areas will not receive measurable
accumulations.

Dangerous Wind Chills Tuesday Morning

Arctic air and strong north winds will accompany this cold front.
Winds will gust to 35 mph this evening along and west of the
Mississippi River. Gusty winds and temperatures in the low to mid
20s Tuesday morning will result in wind chill readings in the
single digits and teens. Temperatures on Tuesday will struggle to
reach the freezing mark in many areas, keeping wind chills in the
upper teens to mid 20s throughout the afternoon. Clear skies and
decreasing winds will allow temperatures to bottom out Wednesday
morning with lows in the mid teens to near 20 degrees.
